Flying with pets requires strict adherence to airline policies. Here is the latest guidance for 2026:

  • Airline Policies:

    • American Airlines: Only allows carry-on pets in the cabin. Checked pets are currently suspended for most commercial flights.

    • Delta: Primarily allows carry-on pets. Checked pets are restricted to military or active Foreign Service personnel orders.

    • Bahamasair: One of the few carriers reliably allowing checked pets in the hold. However, cargo space is limited, so book early.

  • Carrier Specifications: Soft-sided carriers are best for in-cabin travel (must fit under the seat). For cargo, hard plastic crates with metal bolts (not plastic clips) are mandatory.

  • Health Requirements: Sedation is generally forbidden as it can cause respiratory and heart issues at altitude. Pets must be healthy, fit, and at least 8 weeks old (some airlines require older).

  • Booking Procedures: Do not just book your ticket. You must call the airline immediately to add your pet to the reservation. There is a limit on the number of pets per flight.

  • Fees: Expect to pay between $125 (Cabin) to over $200 (Cargo) each way. These fees are separate from your ticket.

  • Restrictions: Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats are often banned from flying in the cargo hold due to breathing risks.

  • Tips for Smooth Travel: Freeze water in the crate cup so it melts slowly without spilling during loading. Tape a small bag of food to the top of the crate in case of delays.
